Jack Cope wins the English Amateur

We are very proud to announce 21 year Jack Cope has won the English Amateur Golf Championship defeating Callan Barrow (Royal Lytham & St Annes) 4 and 3 in the 36 hole final. Joe was round in -7 in the morning to lead 5 up. Barrow started the afternoon round with a birdie but never got better than being 4 behind until proceedings finish with Jack holing from 10 feet on the 33rd hole.

Jack qualified in second spot with two rounds of 69 as one of the 64 that made the match play stages. Joe Long who was also a member of The Players Club up until last year lead on -9 and it looked like it might be an all local final until Joe was pipped at the 5th extra hole in the Quarters. Jack defeated Barclay Brown (Hallamshire) in the semi finals 3 and 1. A four at the last would have seen him round in 65. In the Quarter finals Sam Broadhurst was edged out by one but the strangest round was perhaps against Harrison Ottley Woodd (Cotswold Hills), Cope was 3up when he lost the 14th hole to a birdie. At the 15th Harrison holed his second shot for an eagle 2 to draw back to one down. At the 16th Harrision again holed his second shot for an eagle 2 and this time from 115 yards, it looked like the match was squared but Jack followed him with a hole out from 98 yards and the hole was halved in matching eagles!

Jack was unlucky not win with the Jamega tour event held here at The Players Clubs just two weeks ago at -11 after 16 and knowing -12 was in the clubhouse, Jack was unlucky to take 5 at the 17th after seeing his tee shot pitch on the 300 yard 17th green and run into a tricky lie over the green and under a bush. Jack competes this week at Surrey Downs and then the ‘British’ Amateur Championship itself.

We wish him all the best.
