English Senior Open 2013

Glen Ralph won the English Seniors Open on the last green holing a ten footer to edge out Candian Rick Gibson. The course played firm and fast all week in prepartion for the big one next week at Royal Birkdale. Next year we hope the event will be much bigger when Royal Porthcawl will play host to the Senior Open golf championship. Some great scores throughout the week with several players posting 67’s and four under was 8th place and out of the money.

Team News

As we approach the climax of the season in the Bristol and District League our teams are all doing very nicely. Our 1st team look set to be playing second division golf next year, currently tied top with Shirehampton, the boys have won away from home twice, notably 4-1 at Weston and a closer affair at Bath. Three more matches remain and two home wins will see them through. It’s not been easy for captain Zac who has been plagued with injuries, holidays and work committments meaning 23 players have played first team matches in those first 7 games, what that does not help is those 23 players cant play for thirds because of the league rules.

The seconds clinched promotion of division 6 with an away win at The Bristol and with a home game left can go up as champions with a win over Chipping Sodbury on the 29th July. Aitken’s men have lost just once this season in a close 3-2 match at Sodbury.

The thirds have a tough three games to close their campaign though sit nicely on top of division 7, it alway’s looks as though Farrington Park will be the champions as it is their first team and they have a handfull of county players, away we got thrashed 5-0 but we squeaked a win here at home, strangely only Kingsdown have beaten us at home though we beat them away. It will take at least one more away win to have a chance of promotion. Dan has lost several players who have moved on to second and first division golf but the thirds gives everyone a chance and is the great breeding ground.

Our Presidents Cup run hardly got out of the blocks and we lost away to The Bristol in the first round. We could not raise a team for the seniors scratch cup but in a couple of years when we have some plus fiftyfivers….watchout.

Big thanks to ALL the players, captains and supporters.
